The L.A. Care and Blue Shield Promise Community Re

The L.A. Care and Blue Shield Promise Community Resource Center in Inglewood has partnered with FEAST and God’s Pantry to host a drive-thru food distribution event at Weingart YMCA Wellness & Aquatic Center. We welcome the community to drive-thru and pick up a bag of assorted groceries at no cost to you. Following Los Angeles County guidelines, this event will be contactless. All items will be placed in the trunk of your car.

*Bags will be provided on a first come first served basis, while supplies last.

Happy National Artichoke Heart Day! Not only does this edible thistle have a lot of “heart,” but it contains the highest antioxidant capacity of any vegetable! Native to the Mediterranean area, the artichoke can be eaten raw, boiled, or fried. Once the cooked leaves are eaten and the fibrous upper section of the leaves are discarded, the artichoke heart can be enjoyed! Next time you have an artichoke heart, consider swapping out butter for vinaigrette or lemon juice for a healthy twist!

What's your favorite fruit or veggie: Passion fruit!

What is your go to weeknight recipe: Italian vegetable soup - broth, noodles, and whatever veggies are in the fridge. 🍲

What is one of your impactful food memories: I spent the Summer of 2015 in Mongolia. On a weekend trip to the countryside, our hosts offered to cook a special lunch. In preparation, they introduced us to the sheep who would soon be our meal and showed us the Mongolian way of slaughter. While it was hard to witness this animal’s death, gratitude and connection overshadowed the sadness. I returned home as a new vegetarian, but I hold on to that day’s lesson. Having a deep connection with our food, understanding where it comes from, and sharing it with friends nourishes the body and spirit. 🇲🇳 🐑

Who taught you about food and nutrition: My dad was a great cook. He loved the challenge of cooking decadent recipes, and the reward of sharing these meals with family and friends. He taught me how to dance in the kitchen and the power of food to bring people together.

💚Have you ever tried a vegetable enjoyed by the ancient Greeks 2000 years ago? If you’ve ever eaten collard greens, you have! These thick green leaves have been a staple in diets around the world and are renowned for their health benefits!

💚Fun Fact: Collard greens are often eaten on New Year’s Day to ensure wealth in the new year. After boiling the greens, the remaining broth, “pot liquor,” can be soaked up with cornbread, another food traditionally consumed on New Years!

💚How to Enjoy: In the Southern United States, collard greens are often combined with other green leaf vegetables to make “mixed greens.” In Zimbabwe, they are are wilted in boiling water and mixed with onions and tomato. In Portugal, collards are heated in a popular soup called “Caldo Verde”
