I Feel Like A New Person

by Sonia Gonzalez

I am 34 years old and I am a two time stroke and cancer survivor. I don’t believe in coincidences, so I know I was very fortunate to walk into the Parent Center at Foshay Learning Center during FEAST’s first session at our school.

My health has been like a wild roller coaster ride for the past two years. Since I joined FEAST, not only did I learn about nutrition, but I also learned about the importance of mental health. The recipes were new to me and I tried foods I never have before. My favorite recipes are the Whole Wheat Pasta Salad and the Spicy Hummus.

I loved that the class was divided into two parts. The weekly topics were always very interesting. My favorite topics were Body Image and Beginning with Loving Acceptance. I learned so much about myself, I finally faced my childhood trauma and I feel like a new person.

I’ve applied what I learned at home. I have two young children, my family eats together every day and I have started cooking at home daily. I hadn’t cooked since my strokes in 2017, but through FEAST I gained confidence, not only in the kitchen, but within myself. I am so blessed to have had the opportunity to join this class.

My family is eating new foods and they love the different tastes. We now use less salt and fat, eat less meat and we try to stay away from sodas and juice. We eat a lot more veggies now!

We are so grateful. I hope you keep this class going and you expand and reach so many others in our community! Thank you!

A huge thank you to US Storage Centers for their generous gift, which has helped FEAST support Sonia and her family!
